This is a brief genuine (slightly edited) email conversation I had with a brother regarding Muslims Connect asking for proof of ID for our members. Please read and make your mind up for yourself as to our requirements to join Muslims Connect.

I like the idea of your website. I just have one MAJOR problem with it. All the info you are asking for Passport ,bills etc is exactly the info used by people who engage in identity theft. Of course I\'m not saying that you will be doing that! But as someone who has had their address used by an unknown person to fraudulently acquire credit cards etc (I have had to phone courts even to explain I am not responsible) I would not be happy to hand over this info to anyone unknown personally to me or part of an
well known organisation. Is this a resolvable issue?

Dear Brother,
Thank you for your email voicing your concerns.
We set up Muslims Connect with the intention of offering a service very few
of the mainstream Muslim matrimonial sites are offering. We actually care
about the people on our books and my wife and I fear Allah and his
Judgement.
Anyone can join an online matrimonial site and pretend to be whomsoever they
want to be. We have a duty to protect our female members in particular. If a
sister asks us about a brother's status we want to answer her the most
truthful way we can. We can't be 100 % unless we ask for some form of ID.
The last thing a sister wants is a brother who says he is divorced but
hasn't got the evidence to prove it. Or he may say he has a permit to work
in UK but has come into the country illegally. All these things we do to
protect our members. Mostly for the sisters but also the brothers will
benefit also. And why do we do that? Because we leave our phone number at
the bottom of the page for each member to call and talk to us personally.
When you talk to someone one to one, honesty and integrity has to come
through or trust is lost. All our members trust us implicitly. My wife is in
fact, as we speak in the process of liaising with two members to arrange A
Nikkah.
We have only been in business now for around six months and we have had no
problems up until now. If you would like to join Muslims Connect but are
unsure about us personally...please feel free to call either myself or my
wife. She deals with the membership/personnel side of things, I mainly deal with admin and website etc.
I'm sorry you had to go through this experience. This is the world we live in unfortunately. All is with Allah remember. If this reply doesn't satisfy your query then all I can do is most respectfully suggest you try some other Muslim Matrimonial service.

I totally understand what you are saying and I agree that if it is possible to protect people from dodgy people then that can only be a good thing.I think the men need protecting too though!
I don't know if you have noticed that in the last week or so there has also been a major ad campaign for match.com a mainstream matchmaking website so this method seems to be becoming more popular throughout society.
I've looked at alot of the muslim matchmaking sites and they seem very limited,usually the majority are asian people looking for asian people,which is not surprising really as (obviously you know this) with asian families there is alot of interest in the other family not just the couple.
I joined one called muslimfriends.com but not found anyone suitable.
I'm not sure what to do really,...I do have a valid British Passport,a well paid job,I own my own flat and have never been divorced,have no kids, and I am checkable on the electoral register.You do sound genuine so I will have to think about it and discuss the possible implications of giving any info out to you with friends who might know more than me.

My final thoughts.......
It is true that the UK has a high proportion of Asian Muslims. I am a recently reverted english Muslim myself. I have many friends who are also reverted. All I can tell any prospective members, born Muslims or Revert to come and join us. Muslims Connect can only be effective when YOU join us. If you choose not to then lots of our members will be missing out.
