From Hadhramaut to Sylhet to Whitechapel
Reflecting on the Dawah of Shah Jalal

Date: Thursday, 8th May 2008
Time: 6.45 pm to 8.45 pm

Venue: 1st floor,
London Muslim Centre,
46-92 Whitechapel Road,
London E1 1JQ

Speakers: Habib Ali al-Jifri and Maulana Hassan Ali

Shah Jalal is arguably the greatest and most celebrated Islamic personality of the Bengal region. He is an example of a scholar, saint and leader who balanced spirituality and struggle in a life dedicated to service of others and calling people to Islam's noble and peaceful message. He was also of Yemeni descent and eventually settled in Sylhet, the spiritual capital of Bangladesh and the region from where most of Britain’s Bangladeshi Muslims hail. What lessons do the life of this migrant scholar hold for us today? Can Shah Jalal's magnificent history be made relevant for a new generation of young Muslims? Before and after, Habib Ali will visit a few of the local masjids and also do a walkabout through Whitechapel, of the most interesting neighbourhoods in London.

Partners: This event is co-organised with Islamic Circles.
