Sidi ` Abdelwahab Baniss the blind man (t) The knowing perfect one, the wali, the Master ' Abdelwahab Baniss (T). He is counted among the elite of the companions of Seïdina Ahmed Tidjani (t) and among those which had the Opening so much so that Seïdina Tijani (t) said to him: "You are for me what Ibn Oum Maktoum (companion of the Prophet (r) which also was reached him of blindness) was for the Prophet (R). "
" Among what one reported of him, he said: "I intended Seïdina (t) to say: "When you note that somebody has tobacco on him and that it is in the assembly of Wadhifa, make him leave"
It was reported by Sidi ' Arbi ibn Its-ih (t) that our character said to him: "the authorization of Mouqadem that I had on behalf of Seïdina Tijani (t) to transmit the Wird is conditioned by the fact not to give to Wird to anyone that takes impurities into his body by nasal way, oral or while smoking"
Mouqadem Sidi Taïeb Sefîani (t) also reported that he had the title of Mouqadem and the condition of transmission of Sidi ` Abdelwahab Baniss (T), about in these terms: "It should not give the Wird to the consumer of these impurities, as they are by nasal, oral way or while smoking, and that as well for the use of the hachich as that of the tobacco and opium.
" Sidi Taïeb Sefiani (t) also told: "I saw that this condition, for the transmission of the speeches, was exceptional for him except in the case of Sidi Ibrahim Riyahi (t) which, either, did not give the Tariqa to a consumer of tobacco"
It was reported that when Mouqadem Sidi Taïeb Sefiani (t) left for Tunisia for some businesses, he was invited by brothers. Among people present in the assembly some started to speak in praise of Seïdina Ahmed Tidjani (t) and of the Tariqa and they hoped to be able to enter, they said: "
the Alim Sidi Ibrahim Riyahi defended us to take Tariqa owing to the fact that one consumes and smokes of the tobacco and it put the condition of giving up smoking but we do not manage to stop"
Sidi Taïeb (t) says to them then: "If you are determined to take this Tariqa then I transmit it to you and that even if you stop the use of tobacco" They took it and they had an immense joy then while leaving the house they threw their matches and exclaimed: "There is no good in these things which are the cause that certain Mouqadem could not give us Tariqa."
And they made the oath to Allah, never to consume it agai.
It was also reported that the Sherif Sidi Moussa ibn Ma' zouz ((another companion of Shaykh Tijani) made personally leave any person having the tobacco on him lasting the assembly of Wadhifa.
Seïdina Ahmed Tidjani (t) said about the tobacco: "the consumption of the tobacco is prohibited (haram) and the origin of this prohibition is the word of the Prophet (r) who says: "All that causes a state of weakness is prohibited" But the tobacco is taken into account in this hadith (because of habituation which the tobacco causes).
"Seïdina (t) also said at the time of a certain occasion: "That which does not repent theirs use (i.e. for the similar tobacco and other substances) it will not die of the best end"
Sidi Hajj ` Abdelwahhab ibn El Ahmar (t) reported that once one of the servants of Seïdina (t) was reached of a serious disease and as it arrived at death he started to utter vulgar words without its language not being able to pronounce the certificate of faith . The brothers were astonished by that and some said: "But how this be for him while Seïdina Tijani is alive.
They left to find Seïdina Ahmed Tidjani (t) and told him the business, with what Seïdina (t) says to them: "Question his wife on what it did! "When they questioned her, she described her husbands good religious qualities and his firmness in obedience with his Lord put aside that he consumed tobacco. Seïdina Ahmed Tidjani (t) then says to them, after they had brought back these statements to him: "It is because of this bad habit he is unable to profess the Shahada, go see him and require him to repent to Allah." They were gone near him and told him that, he repented and following this repentance he could pronounce the formula of faith and his spirit left its body.
It must be known that Shaykh Tijani was very strict with the Sharia.
