She's A Thoroughly Modern Muslim
BBC One

Weds 12 September
23:15-23:45
Haleh, Asia, Maryam and Fari

To mark the start of Ramadan, BBC One presents a delightful film about a rarely-heard voice of Middle England, featuring four women who are keen to show people that they are Thoroughly Modern Muslims. Haleh is a professor, Asia is a cartoonist, Maryam is a trainee solicitor and Fari is a full-time mum and qualified GP.

Aided by a friendly commentary from actress Mina Anwar, they invite viewers to see Britain and Islam through their eyes, and show how they interpret the foundations of their faith in contemporary British culture.

The programme addresses all the issues expected from a documentary about Muslims – head-covering, terrorism and the Five Pillars of Islam – but people might not expect the spirit of friendliness, humour and warmth that these four women display, from Professor Haleh's modest rebellion against fasting, to young mum Fari persuading her daughter to eat her greens. And, while Asia tries to persuade the world that she isn't oppressed, Mancunian Maryam hopes one day she'll be a "strong enough person" to cover her head. They're dedicated followers of Islam, but passionate about the little things that make Britain a great place.

She's A Thoroughly Modern Muslim is 30 minutes in the company of four women – thoroughly British and thoroughly Muslim – who strive to meet the challenges posed by faith and British culture.

Shahru Ramadhan from Shaykh ‘Abdul Qadir Jilani

"O you who believe! Fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you that you may (learn) self restraint." (Al-Qur`an, 2:183) - So fasting helps learn self-restraint, (Taqwa)

Begins with Mercy :- 1 st 10 days, Middle is Forgiveness 2 nd 20 days, Ends with deliverance from Hell :- 3rd 30 days

Who ever fasts will walk through the 8 th gate of Heaven called Rayyan. It is reserved only for the people of fasting. It is the month of Sabr – patient and charitable sharing.

Cultivate 4 practices and repeat them frequently which;

2 will earn your Lords pleasure

2 you just cannot afford to do without

1 st Dhikr of Shahadah la-e-laha-illal-lah

2 nd Begging for Forgiveness i.e. Astaghfirullah, Rab-bigh-fir-lee

3 rd Imploring to be granted the Garden of Paradise

4 th Taking Refuge from the Fire of Hell i.e. Allahumma jarnee min-nan-nar

It called Ramadhan because it has is a scorching effect upon sins; it burns sins away. So our bodies and hearts experience a process of purification. [so you could also understand it as, purifying yourself on earth or wait and be purified in the burning of hell fire the choice is yours ]

The sleeping of the one fasting is an act of ibadah –worship, as there silence is tasbih – saying subhanallah; moreover his dua's are sure to be answered and this good deeds will be multiplied.

Three types of people pray are answered, one of them is the one Fasting. So ask many dua's while fasting. Also the fast is a junna (suit of armour, protective shield) for the one who fast.

While doing voluntarily ibadh like nafl or dhikr at night, read from the noble Quran the verse

" Inna Fa-tahna laka fath-hum-mubeena "- We have surely given you a signal victory (48:1)

That person will receive a guarantee of safekeeping for the whole year. So read it frequently.

Every month one should try to fast al-ayyum al-bid – [White nights] which is 13 th 14 th 15 th nights of every month as the reward from the 1 st is 10,000 rewards, 2 nd 30,000 rewards, 3 rd 300,000 rewards.

Every Sajdah – prostration is 1700 rewards. Also every nafl has the equivalent of a fard pray that is 70 times. As a fard is 70 times more than a nafl pray.

Only on Friday and Shahru Ramadhan there is no Hisaab – [reckoning] given if you spend your wealth. For you will be questioned on how to spent your wealth on the day of Reckoning, expect Friday and Shahru Ramadhan.

The garden of Paradise will be refurbished and re-decorated every month of Ramadhan and the maidens of Paradise will splendidly adorn themselves and be requesting for a suitor to marry.

No servant who keeps the fast at least one day of the month of Ramadhan, can possibly fail to be married to a wife from brides of Paradise.

Who ever provides Iftar –[breaking of Fast] for someone, will be forgiven for their sins and earn freeing from hellfire, also be granted the rewards of actions of the one fasting, without the one fasting losing anything. Even if giving a dried date, you will be rewarded. Providing a satisfying Iftar you will be rewarded by drinking from the hawd –[Basin] of Allah; you will never feel thirsty after drinking it.

In this Month Allah will ask 3 times "Does anyone have a request to make, so I may grant his request? Is there anyone who wishes to repent, so that I may relent towards him and accept his repentance? Is there anyone wishing to seek forgiveness, so I may forgive him?…"

Warning !

Do not say Ramadhan in a sentence, say like the Quran says Shahru Ramadhan 2:185

There are many that fast by the day and get nothing but hunger and thirst and by the night spend it in qiyam layla – [ night vigil ]pray and get nothing but insomnia. Why? Looking with desire, backbite, lying breaks the fast.

There are 4 exception who will not be forgiven in the month of Ramadhan

Addicted to alcohol

Disobedient and disrespectful towards parents

Guilty of disrupting bonds of kinship – relatives and families fighting

Reluctant to abandon a grudge and stubbornly unwilling to accept the restoration of good relations with anyone who has offended him.

Composed by Muhammad Sajad Ali Qadiri Noshahi

Excerpts from Al-Ghunya li-Talibi Tariq al-Haqq Vol.3 by Shaykh ‘Abdul Qadir Jilani

70,000 unveiled when breaking the Fast and the Vision of the Divine BeautyWhen Ramadhan Begins the gates of paradise are Opened

See that Kalimullah Musa was given a conversation with Allah on Mount Sinai; You have your own Mount Sinai, at the time of breaking fast when you can hold a thousand and one conversations with Allah. Musa said 'O my Lord, you speak to me, will you not show me your beauty'. Allah said you shall not see me. How can you see when there are 70,000 veils between Us. But a gift for the last Ummah which I have called Ramadhan, I shall so manifest myself at the time of breaking fast for the Last Ummah. Whereas between you and Me there are 70,000 veils. There will be no veils at all between Us and the Last Ummah, at the time of breaking fast.

'The fast is for Me, and I will reward it' - So the reward is the Vision of the Divine Beauty.

Every hour of the month of Ramadhan 600,000 people are delivered from Divine Punishment, it goes like this until the Night of Qadr, then on that night the Rate of deliverance then becomes equal to the total of those spared in the hours between the beginning of Ramadhan and the night of Qadr; it then continues like this until the day of Eid.

Heavens, earth and angels weep last day of month of Ramadhan On the last day of Ramadhan the heavens, earth and angels weep for the misfortune of end of Ramadhan, When asked What misfortune! It was said the misfortune of Ramadhan being over.

Why weep In the month of Ramadhan, prayers are accepted, charity is received, good deeds are rewarded 100's folded, punishment is waived, and sin are pardoned. But it should be us weeping that such a blessed month has passed, will we never see another next year?

1000 years of Punishment for the Nafs, But it still was arrogant - Fasting the Cure

When Allah created the Nafs he asked who it was, the reply was with arrogance, the same as you. So Allah burned it 1000 years, asked it again the same reply the same as you, so He froze it for a 1000 years, the same reply. Allah Punished the Ego with so many different types of punishments, each time for a 1000 years. Finally he starved the Ego for a1000 years and then asked who are you, the Ego replied humbly your mere servant and you are the Lord of the Worlds. So Fasting has a major impact for the Ego, it humble its and gives the Spirit more freedom. Most of us live our lives following of Egos, but when we fast it allows us to be more obedient slaves of Allah.

Inviting Allah to Dinner

Remember the story when Bani-Israel inviting Allah, for Meal. But Allah was turned away By Musa. So Musa and his people waited patiently but only a poor old man came asking for water, but Musa turned him away saying, don't you know who is coming, go there and do some work, he replied but I'm hungry. His people embraced him saying you lied, Allah didn't come. Later he asked his Lord, You said you would come to dinner. Allah said I did come, I came in the heart of that old man who you turned away.

Nothing can contain Allah, no cosmos, universes or all the worlds. But the heart of the Mu-min, can only contain Allah. So how about Ramadhan, and feeding the poor and hungry, your brothers in Islam. You may just turn away Allah, like Musa did. It's a Month of being Generous so feed who ever you can, even if it be with one Date. For you will receive the reward of two fasts, yours and theirs by feeding them, increase the number of people to feed and receive more rewards and palaces in heaven.

Know the Master (Sayyid) of the Months is Ramadhan, and the Master (Sayyid) of the days is Friday. Why is Friday a Sayyid-Master of Days, Well there are 5 reasons and one of the secrets is, a holy hour on Friday were no Dua is surly refused, it is the hour when Sayyiduna Adam was created, and it's the last hour of sun light on Friday. So do much Dua's on this day in Ramadhan and in all the days of the month of Ramadhan. And don't forget, The 10 T's of Ramadhan.

compiled By Muhammad Sajad Ali Qadiri-Noshahi

Mainly Taken From Shaykh Muzaffer Ozak's Book -Irshad

The 10 T's of Ramadhan not to forget

1 Tilawah - read Quran
2 Tahajjud - 8 rakah's before Fajr
3 Tara-weeh - 20 rakahs
4 Tasbee-hat- Read 3rd Kamilat
5 Tadhar-ru' (ardent Dua)
6 Tataw-wu' (Nafil Ibadah
7 Tasah-hur (eating Sehri)
8 Tawa-dhu (humility)
9 Tafak-kur (contemplation)
10 Taubah (repentance)

Poem by Maulana Rumi Fasting

There's hidden sweetness in the stomach's emptiness.
We are lutes, no more, no less
If the soundbox is stuffed full of anything, no music.
If the brain and the belly are burning clean with fasting,
every moment a new song comes out of the fire.
The fog clears, and new energy makes you run up the steps in front of you.
Be emptier and cry like reed instruments cry.
Emptier, write secrets with the reed pen.
When you're full of food and drink, an ugly metal statue sits where your
spirit should.
When you fast, good habits gather like friends who want to help.
Fasting is Solomon (as) 's ring.
Don't give it to some illusion and lose your power, but even if you have,
if you've lost all will and control, they come back when you fast,
like soldiers appearing out of the ground, pennants flying above them.
A table descends to your tents, the Lord's table.
Expect to see it when you fast, this table spread with other food,
better than the broth of cabbages.

DUA RAMADHAN TO BE RECITED ALL THE TIME
Nash'hadu an'la ilaaha il'l allah Nas'tagh'firul'lah

Rewards For Performing Taraweeh During Ramadhan
Enlivening the Nights of Ramadan by Performing the Special Tárawíh Prayers by Sheikh Mûzaffër Ôzâk al Jerrahi

Look at the wages of those who perform these prayers! According to Áli ibn Abí Tâlib , when our Prophet Muhammad (saaw) was asked about the virtue of the Tárawíh and the reward for doing them, he said

1ST NIGHT - Almighty Allah forgives all the sins of a mu'min.

2nd NIGHT - Your sins including your mu'min parents sins are forgiven.

3rd NIGHT - Below the Arsh-Allah's throne there an angel proclaims,"O, MU'MIN make good deeds with sincerity, Allah has forgiven your past sins"

4th NIGHT - You are awarded the sawaab of reading Thaurat, Injeel, Zaboor and the Quraan Majid.

5th NIGHT - You get sawaab equal to that which you would gain if you read your salaat in masjid Haram, Medina Munawara and masjid Aqsa.

6th NIGHT - You gain the sawaab of the Tawaaf made by the 70,000 angels made at Baitul Mamoor on the 7th sky.

7th NIGHT - You receive the sawaab of those good people who helped Musa A.S. when he fought Fir'un and Haman.

8th NIGHT - The rewards for the 8th taraweeh are equal to the sawaab awarded to Ibrahim A.S.

9th NIGHT - The rewards of this night are equivalent to the sawaabs awarded to our HOLY PROPHET - MUHAMMED S.A.W. [P.B.U.H]

10th NIGHT - Allah proclaims for you all the best in the world.

11th NIGHT - The reward for this night is that when a mu'min leaves this world, he goes with faith {Imaan}

12th NIGHT - On the day of resurrection you will appear with a face with so much (Nur) lustre on it, as much as the lustre of the 14th moon.

13th NIGHT - On the day of resurrection, you will be protected from evil.

14th NIGHT - On the day of resurrection, the angels will be witnesses for the taraweeh you are performing. On this evidence Allah will grant your entry into Paradise without account.

15th NIGHT - All the Malaikaas, the Hoories and the Arsh-wa-Kursie (Allah's throne) plead for you before Allah for his mercy.

16th NIGHT - Allah gives instructions: to free you from Hell - to allow you entrance to Paradise.

17th NIGHT - Allah grants you the sawaab of the Anbiya (Prophets)

18th NIGHT - On this night a angel announces that Allah is happy with you, and your parents.

19th NIGHT - The reward for this night is that Allah makes your position greater in Paradise.

20th NIGHT - On this night Allah rewards you by granting to you the sawaab of the martyred and the pious.

21st NIGHT - On this night, Allah builds a house with lustre for you in Paradise.

22nd NIGHT - On the resurrection ground you will arrive duly freed from sorrow and worry.

23rd NIGHT - On this night Allah makes a garden ("shaher") for you in Paradise.

24th NIGHT - On this night Allah grants twenty-four duas (wishes).

25th NIGHT - Allah lifts his punishment form your grave.

26th NIGHT - Allah increases for you the sawaab of 40 years.

27th NIGHT - The rewards for this night of Taraweeh are that you will be able to cross the Pul-Siraat (bridge) like lightning.

28th NIGHT - Your position in Paradise is increased by one stage.

29th NIGHT - Allah Ta'aala grants the sawaab of 1,000 "makabul" (accepted) Haj.

30th NIGHT - By performing this night of taraweeg you would be one of the many persons who, on the day of resurrection will hear Allah Ta'aala say in Paradise, "Eat whichever fruit you like to eat, bathe with the water of Salsabil and drink the Kauser water! I am thy Lord and you are my person ! "
