Qasīdat-ul-Burda
Qasīdat-ul-Burda ("Poem of the Mantle"), as it came to be called, is an ode composed by the eminent Sufi Shaikh Abū `Abdillāh Muhammad ibn Sa`īd al-Būsīrī (d. 1296) of Egypt. The poem, whose actual title is al-Kawākib ad-Durrīya fī Madhi Khair-ul-Barīya ("Celestial Lights in Praise of the Best of Creation"), is recited throughout the Muslim world.
al-Būsīrī composed the Burda while suffering paralysis of half his body. After praying to God for health, he fell asleep and dreamt of reciting his compilation to Muhammad. The prophet touched the paralysed body parts and threw his mantle (burda) over al-Būsīrī. On arising, the shaikh was cured. His story spread and the poem became famous.
Muslims venerate the ode. The poem is memorized and recited in congregations, and its verses decorate the walls of public buildings and mosques. Some Muslims believe that, if recited with love and devotion, the Burda can cure diseases and purify hearts. Over 90 commentaries have been written on this poem and it has been translated into Persian, Urdu, Turkish, Berber, Punjabi, English, French, German, and other languages.
The Burda is divided into 10 chapters and 160 verses. Each verse ends with the Arabic letter mīm, a style called mīmīya. The 10 chapters of the Burda concern
1.Love for the Prophet Muammad
2.A Warning Against the Desires of the Soul
3.Praise of the Prophet
4.Events During the Birth of the Prophet
5.The Miracles of the Prophet
6.Praise of the Qur'ān
7.The Night Ascension of the Prophet
8.The Battles of the Prophet
9.Repentance, Asking Forgiveness of God, and Seeking Intercession of the Prophet peace be upon him.
10.Supplication to God
Busiri
Būsīrī (Abū 'Abdallāh Muhammad ibn Sa'īd ul-Būsīrī) (1211–1294), Egyptian poet, lived in Egypt, where he wrote under the patronage of Ibn Hinna, the vizier. His poems seem to have been wholly on religious subjects. The most famous of these is the so-called " Poem of the Mantle." It is entirely in praise of prophet Muhammed, who cured the poet of paralysis by appearing to him in a dream and wrapping him in a mantle.
The poem has little literary value, being an imitation of Ka'b ibn Zuhair's poem in praise of the Prophet, but its history has been unique (cf. I. Goldziher in Revue de l'histoire des religions, vol. xxxi. pp. 304 ff.). Even in the poet's lifetime it was regarded as sacred. Up to the present time its verses are used as amulets; it is employed in the lamentations for the dead; it has been frequently edited and made the basis for other poems, and new poems have been made by interpolating four or six lines after each line of the original. It has been published with English translation by Faizullabhai (Bombay, 1893), with French translation by R. Basset (Paris, 1894), with German translation by C. A. Ralfs (Vienna, 1860), and in other languages elsewhere.

Panegyrics of the Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam
I'm going to write a master thesis on the panegyrics of the Prophet Muhammad SAW. I wonder if I can get some materials regarding later poems that were written as a result of al-Busayri's first qasidatul Burdah. Who are the writers and are there any major differences in the way the later poems are written? i.e. thematically and stylistically. Thank you, do reply.

We wish you all the best in your interesting topic for a masters thesis on the panegyrics of Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam.
Ahmad Shawqi wrote the Nahjul Burda which means “in the way of the Burda” in which he adopted the same rhyme and rhythm as the Burda Sharif of Imam al-Busiri Rahmatullahi ‘alayh. More recently, Shaykh Hasan Muhammad Shaddad bin ‘Umar Ba ‘Umar Rahmatullahi ‘alayh (passed away 1424 AH/ 2003 CE) of Madina also wrote a Nahjul Burda following the same rhyme and rhythm as the original Burda.
While the Burda of Imam al-Busiri is in ten parts
(www.iqra.net/qasaaid1/burda) Shaykh Hasan’s Nahjul Burda is in eleven parts as follows:
1) Love of Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala and of Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam
2) Admonition against the desires of the lower self
3) In praise of Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam
4) The lineage of Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam and his attributive names
5) His blessed and noble birth
6) His miracles
7) His noble and beautiful character
 His mercy and humility
9) His heavenly ascension

11) Supplication to Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala
Another famous qasida (religious poem) of Imam al-Busiri is the Mudariyya. A Mudariyya is a qasida that includes the name ‘Mudar’ in one of its opening verses. Mudar was one of the ancestors of Prophet Muhammad, Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam. Imam ‘Abdallah bin ‘Alawi al-Haddad did a “takhmis” of this Mudariyya. A “takhmis” is the augmentation of a couplet to a quintet. Following the tradition of Imam al-Busiri, many other mashayikh wrote a Mudariyya, among them being Shaykh Uways bin Muhammad al-Qadiri of Somalia. His Mudariyya is in praise of Prophet Muhammad while the Mudariyya by Imam al-Busiri is essentially “salawaat” in verse, invoking the blessings of Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala on Prophet Muhammad, Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam.
The third most well-known qasida of Imam al-Busiri is the Hamziyya. A Hamziyya is a poem all of whose verses rhyme in the letter “hamza”. Imam al-Busiri wrote a Hamziyya with more than 400 verses which contains the biography and history of Prophet Muhammad, Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam. The hamziyya is an ancient poetic form. It is well known that Hadrat Hassaan bin Thabit Rady Allahu ‘Anhu, a companion of Prophet Muhammad wrote a Hamziyya in his honour. Since then, various ‘ulama have written a hamziyya including Imam ‘Abdallah bin ‘Alawi al-Haddad and Imam ‘Ali bin Muhammad al-Habshi. Imam Yusuf ibn Isma’il an-Nabhani wrote a Hamziyya Alfiyya with about 1000 verses, hence it is called “alfiyya”.
The Hamziyya Alfiyya is a poetic biography in 30 parts as follows:
1) Introduction in praise of Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa Sallam
2) An explanation about the Nur-i-Muhammadi that Allah created, and the birth of the Prophet Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa Sallam
3) His nursing and upbringing
4) How angels cut open his heart when he was four years old to clean and purify it
5) How he was born an orphan
6) He was foretold in previous divine scriptures
7) The irreligious conditions of Makkans before he proclaimed Islam
 The beginning of Islam with revelation of verses of the Qur’an
9) The first to accept Islam
10) The enmity of the Makkans against him and his companions when he proclaimed Islam
11) The polytheists of Makka boycott the Muslims
12) The passing away of his uncle Abu Talib and his wife Khadija Rady Allahu ‘Anha
13) His persecution in Taif where he prayed for the forgiveness of his persecutors
14) He preached pure Islamic monotheism
15) His heavenly ascension, body and soul
16) People of Madina accept Islam
17) His migration to Madina
1  Allah gives him permission to fight his enemies so that oppression is no more
19) The battles of Badr, Uhud and other battles
20) The Peace Treaty of Hudaybiyya
21) The conquest of Makka without bloodshed

Another popular qasida of Imam al-Busiri is the Muhammadiyya in praise of the Prophet which has the name “Muhammad” in each of its verses. Shaykh Hasan Muhammad Shaddad bin ‘Umar Ba ‘Umar composed a Muhammadiyya in similar fashion. Shaykh ‘AbdurRahman bin Shaykh ‘Umar ‘Ali al-Qadiri went a step further. He composed a qasida Muhammadiyya of 40 verses, each of which begins and ends with the name Muhammad.
So far, I have explained about the ways in which the qasaid (plural of qasida) are similar. Now we come to an explanation of poetic forms that are different.

The second one is the Mawlid un-Nabi in verse which gives the biography of the Prophet Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa Sallam with his birth as its theme. The most famous of these is the Mawlid un-Nabi Nazm of Imam al-Barzanji. It is a “nuniya” consisting of 205 verses all rhyming in the letter “nun”. This has been translated into Swahili poetry by al-Khatib Kheri bin Shahib of Comoro Islands. Other such “mawlid” in poetic meter have been composed by Shaykh Muhammad ‘Abdallah Shaddad bin ‘Umar Ba ‘Umar, al-Imam ibn al-Jawzi, and Sulayman Chelebi Effendi (in Turkish).
The third one is the “salawaat” on the Prophet Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam whose opening verse is:
Ya Rabbi Salli ‘alaa Muhammad
Ya Rabbi Salli ‘alayhi wa Sallim.
Many mashayikh have composed such poetic salawaat including Imam ‘Abdullah bin ‘Alawi al-Haddad, Imam ‘Ali bin Muhammad al-Habshi, al-Habib Ahmad bin Muhammad al-Muhdaar; al-Habib as-Sayyid ‘Aydarus al-’Adni, as-Sayyid Ja’far as-Sadiq al-Mirghani, al-Imam ‘AbdurRahman ad-Dayba’i, as-Sayyid Muhammad ‘Uthman ar-Mirghani, Imam Muhammad bin Abi Bakr bin Rashid al-Baghdadi, Shaykh al-’Arusi al-Maghribi, Imam Muhammad al-’Attar al-Jazairi, Shaykh ‘AbdurRahman bin Ahmad az-Zayla’i and Shaykh Haaj Sufi.
Various mashaayikh and ‘ulama have composed the “mi’rajiyya” which takes the mi’raj or the heavenly ascension of Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam for its theme. The most famous of these are the ones by Imam Ahmad Raza Khan in Urdu and by Alauddin Sabit of Bosnia.
Shaykh Mustafa Rushdi ad-Dimashqi has composed “Asma un Nabi Manzuma” with 53 verses all rhyming in the letter “raa”, hence it is a “raaiyya” It includes the 201 attributive names of Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam in the order in which they appear in Dalaail ul Khayraat of Imam al-Jazuli.
Some ‘ulama have written such voluminous poetry that they cover all aspects of Islam, including the history of Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, his noble character, his beautiful manners and conduct, his miracles, his heavenly ascesion, his battles to eradicate oppression and establish Islamic justice and the rule of law, and about how Islam spread. The most well-known of these is the Mathnawi of Mawlana Jalaluddin Rumi in Farsi with more than 25, 000 verses. The Mathnawi is a poetic form in which the two hemistich of a verse rhyme and the rhyme changes from one verse to the next.
Other ‘ulama have written so many religious poems on all aspects of Islam that they have been compiled into books called “Diwan”, for example, the “Diwan” of Imam ‘Abdallah bin ‘Alawi al-Haddad with more than 100 qasaaid and the “Diwan” of Imam ‘Ali bin Muhammad al-Habshi with more than 240 qasaaid, all arranged in alphabetical order, beginning with qasaaid rhyming in the letter ‘hamza’ and ending with qasaaid rhyming in the letter ‘yaa’.
Another genre of qasida in honour of the Prophet Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam is the “hurufiyya” where the verses sequentially begin with letters (huruf) of the Arabic alphabet, in alphabetical order. One such “hurufiyya” has been composed by Shaykh Uways bin Muhammad al-Qadiri.
It should be noted that panegyrics on Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam have not only been written in Arabic but indeed in all the major languages.
Some of the mashaayikh and shu’ara (poets) who have composed religious poetry in honour of Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa Sallam are:
Shaykh Abu Bakr bin Salim and Ibn al-Farid (in Arabic);
al-’Allama ‘AbdulRahman Jami, Shaykh Sa’di Shirazi, Shaykh Fariduddin Attar, Hadrat Bulleh Shah and Amir Khusrau (in Farsi);
Yunus Emre (in Turkish);
Hamzah Fansuri (in Indonesian);
Shaykh Muhammad bin ‘Ali al-Ma’awi, al-’Allama as-Sayyid Muhammad bin Sharif Sa’id al-Biedh and Shaykh Saidi Musa (in Swahili);
Aliyu Na-Mangi (in Hausa);
Shaykh Uways bin Muhammad al-Qadiri (in Somali);
Mulla ‘Abdul Hamid (in Pushto);
Khwaja Mir Dard, ‘Allama Muhammad Iqbal, and ‘Abdul Sattar Niyazi (in Urdu);
Sultan ul ‘Arifin Sultan Bahu, Baba Fariduddin Ganj Shakar and Hadrat Miyan Muhammad Bakhsh (in Punjabi);
Rahim ‘Ali Mari and Mulla Ibrahim (in Baloch); and
Shah ‘Abdullatif Bhitai and Bedil Rohriwaro (in Sindhi);
may Allah make us walk in the footsteps of all the great and noble Muslims mentioned in this letter, Amin.
It should be also noted that even if the poem is not specifically on the Prophet Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, it inevitably ends with a couplet invoking salawaat (blessings) and salaams (salutations) on him.

AL-BURDA: THE PROPHET'S MANTLE

The Burda, or the Prophet's Mantle is a qasida (hymn) composed by the great Sufi Shaykh Imam Sharafuddin Muhammad Al-Busiri Rahmatullahi 'Alaih who was born in Misr (Egypt) in 608 A.H. (1212 C.E) and died in 695 A.H. (1296 C.E). He was a disciple of Imam Abu'l 'Abbas al-Mursi Rahmatullahi 'Alaih who was a Khalifa of Imam Abu'l Hasan ash-Shazili Rahmatullahi 'Alaih.
He composed the Burda while suffering from a stroke which had paralysed half of his body. After praying to Allah Sub'hanahu wa Ta'ala to heal him, he fell asleep and in his dream recited this qasida to the Holy Prophet Sayyidina wa Mawlana Hadhrat Muhammad Mustafa Sallallahu 'Alaihi wa Sallam who touched the paralysed part of his body and threw his mantle (Burda) over him. On arising, he was miraculously cured, the news of which spread far and wide. Hence the qasida came to be called Qasida tu'l Burda and received veneration among all Muslims as a qasida especially approved by the beloved Prophet Sallallahu 'Alaihi wa Sallam. Its verses are often learned by heart and inscribed on the walls of public buildings. It is congregationally recited in the majalis (spiritual gatherings) of the Zaakireen (those who remember Allah Ta'ala) all over the world. It cures diseases as well as purifies hearts if recited with love and devotion.
More than 90 commentaries have been written on this qasida and it has been translated in Persian, Urdu, Turkish, Berber, Punjabi, English, French and German, among other languages.
The Burda is in 10 parts and has 160 verses all of which end in the Arabic letter Meem, hence it is a "Meemiyya". The 10 parts of the Burda are about
1. Love for Rasulullah Sallallahu 'Alaihi wa Sallam
2. A warning against the desires of the nafs
3. Praise of the beloved Prophet Sallallahu 'Alaihi wa Sallam
4. Events occuring on his birth
5. His miracles
6. Praise of the Glorious Qur'an
7. The "Isra" and "Mi'raj" of the noble Prophet Sallallahu 'Alaihi wa Sallam
8. His battles
9. Repentence, asking forgiveness of Allah Sub'hanahu wa Ta'ala and seeking intercession of the beloved Prophet Sallallahu 'Alaihi wa Sallam
10. Supplication to Allah Sub'hanahu wa Ta'ala

PRAISING THE HOLY PROPHET
Blessings and Salutations
of Allah be upon him
Muhammad, leader of the two worlds
and of Man and the jinn,
Leader also of the Arabs and
non Arabs and their kin.
Our Prophet, Commander of right,
prohibits evil's way,
Yet no one's speech more gentle could be
than his nay or yea.
Beloved by Allah is he upon
whose pleading we depend
From terrors of the Day of Judgement,
which on us descend.
He summoned people unto Allah,
they to him did adhere,
And clung fast to the rope that none
could ever rent or tear.
In morals and features
he, all prophets did exceed,
None could approach his knowledge,
or his bounty e'er precede.
And thus from Allah's Apostle
they acquired and did gain,
A handful of the vast sea
or a sip of gen'rous rain.
So other prophets in their rightful place
before him stand,
Regarding knowledge and the wisdom
that they understand.
He perfect is in traits concealed,
and features bright and clear,
And Man's Creator chose him
as His most beloved and dear.
Too far above all men is he
to have a partner who
Has equal qualities, because
the essence of virtue
That in him lies is indivisible,
and wholly true

Al-Burda Explanation
Chapter 1
In this chapter Sidi Busairi (may Allah be satisfied with him) speaks of his love for Sayyidina Muhammad (salAllahu alayhi wasalam). He tries to conceal this love and who his beloved is. For this reason he has not mentioned the name of Sayyidina Muhammad (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) directly in the whole chapter. By mentioning places and things close to Medina, he alludes to Sayyidina Muhammad (salAllahu alayhi wasalam). Due to this excessive love and devotion for Sayyidina Muhammad (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) he has become completely restless, thus exposing this love to everyone.
Chapter 2
In this chapter Sidi Busairi (may Allah be satisfied with him) mentions two reasons for restraining of lust and carnal desires. Firstly: A person falls in love due to lust and carnal desires. After mentioning love in the first chapter he now mentions restraining lust and carnal desires. He also mentions that his entire life has been spent in sin. He sincerely regrets what he has done and repents to Allah Almighty. Secondly: Restraining lust and carnal desires is essential for gaining love for Sidna Muhammad (salAllahu alayhi wasalam). The love which has for Sidna Muhammad (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) is a pure love and can only be attained by purifying oneself of lust and carnal desires.
Chapter 3
After claiming his love in the first chapter, and how to attain it, in the second Sidi Busairi begins the praises of Sidna Muhammad (salAllahu alayhi wasalam). He openly declares his love and shows the great qualities and prefect character of Sidna Muhammad (salAllahu alayhi wasalam). While showing his love he also shows the unrestricted and unlimited love which Allah Ta’aala has ability Sidi Busairi has for Sidna Muhammad (salAllahu alayhi wasalam). When Allah Almighty has praised the beloved Nabi Muhammad (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) then why should he and all of us also not try to excel in our praises and love for Sidna Muhammad (salAllahu alayhi wasalam).
Chapter 4
Sidi Busairi, in this chapter, specks of the birth of Sidna Muhammad (salAllahu alayhi wasalam). In the pervious chapter his praises were mentioned. The blessed day on which Sidna Muhammad (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) was born is a praise worthy event. The birth of Sidna Muhammad (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) illuminated the entire universe. Some miracles and incidents which took place at the time of birth are mentioned in this chapter. These were signs of the greatness of Sidna Muhammad (salAllahu alayhi wasalam). Sidna Muhammad (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) him came to remove all difficulties and calamities from the world.
Chapter 5
In this chapter Sidi Busairi (may Allah be satisfied with him) describes the miracle of the Holy Qur'an. Every miracle of all the other prophets was only temporary and was only witnessed by those who were present at that time. The Holy Quran is that ever-lasting miracle which is witnessed by all people for all time to come. Sidi Busairi encourages people to recite the Holy Quran and act upon its commands.
Chapter 6
Sidi Busairi (may Allah be satisfied with him) writes this poem in chronological sequence concerning the life and mission of Sidna Muhammad, (salAllahu alayhi wasalam). After praising Sidna Muhammad (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) and mentioning his birth he discusses the invitation of Sidna Muhammad (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) toward Allah Almighty. With the first wahi the prophethood of Sidna Muhammad, blessings and peace of Allah be upon him, is proclaimed. In this chapter Sidi Busairi speaks of the miraculous journey (Mi'raaj) of Sidna Muhammad, blessings and peace of Allah be upon him to the seventh heaven. On this journey Sidna Muhammad, blessings and peace of Allah be upon him passed the Sidratu al-Muntahaa and was taken to such close proximity to Allah Ta'aala, where no other creation had ever gone or will ever go again. Sidi Busairi shows that Sidna Muhammad, blessings and peace of Allah be upon him superseded every other creation in rank. From this one can gauge the exalted status of Sidna Muhammad, blessings and peace of Allah be upon him.
Chapter 8
Up to the time of Mi'raaj Sidna Muhammad, blessings and peace of Allah be upon him and the Sahabah (may Allah be pleased with them) were living in Makka. In the thirteenth year of nubuwwa they were commanded by Allah Ta'aala to make hijra to Medina. After establishing an Islamic state in Medina Sidna Muhammad, blessings and peace of Allah be upon him was given permission to make Jihad against the disbeliveers. By means of jihad and nashr, Islam became the dominant religion. Sidi Busairi in this chapter discusses the jihad of Sidna Muhammad, peace and blessing of Allah upon him, as well as his unflinching faith and trust in Allah Almighty. He also discusses his unparalleled bravery, heroic feats and spirit of sacrifice for the Deen of Islam by both Sidna Muhammad, blessings and peace of Allah be upon him as well as the Sahabah (may Allah be pleased with them).
Chapter 9
After discussing the life of Sidna Muhammad, blessings and peace of Allah be upon him, his perfection and exalted status Sidi Busairi (R.A) in this chapter seeks forgiveness from Allah Ta’aala through the intercession and Waseela (agency) of Sidna Muhammad, blessings and peace of Allah be upon him. Sidi Busairi says that his life was wasted in sin and disobedience; he regrets his misdeeds and turns towards Allah Ta’aala seeking forgiveness and repentance. He uses this poem as a Waseela (agency) through Sidna Muhammad, blessings and peace of Allah be upon him to gain acceptance in the court of Allah.
Chapter 10
After repenting Sidi Busairi (may Allah be pleased with him) now takes refuge in his for Sidna Muhammad, blessings and peace of Allah be upon him as a means for his salvation. Due to his sins, he is deserving of Allah’s punishment but wishes and hopes that through the intercession and assistance of Sidna Muhammad, blessings and peace of Allah be upon him, he will receive salvation. His only hope is to love Sidna Muhammad, blessings and peace of Allah be upon him and gain his intercession. Sidi Busairi (may Allah be pleased with him) ends this poem by conveying Salaams upon Sidna Muhammad, blessings and peace of Allah be upon him, his family, Khualafa-e-Rashideen and his Sahabah (may Allah be pleased with them). He also concludes with a du’aa to Allah to forgive him, the reciter and all the people who are a means of propagating this poem.

Qasida Burdah(The poem of the scarf)
The reason for writing this poem
The writer HAZRAT IMAAM SAALIH SHARA-FUD-DEEN ABU ABDULIAH MUHAMMAD BIN HASAN AL-BUSAIRI R.A had become paralysed. His doctors and physicians gave up all hope of his recovery. Eventually in this state of complete helplessness and despair he composed this poem expressing the grandeur and excellence of Sayyidina Rasuluallah Sallallhu Alayhi Wasallam. Using this as his sole means of asking Allah Ta'alaa to cure him from his illness. He isolated himself in a quiet place one Thursday night and with complete devotion, concentration and sincerity/ began reciting this poem. While reciting it sleep overcame him. He had a vision of Sayyidina. Rasuluallah Sallallhu Alayhi Wasallam. He told Sayyidina Rasuluallah Sallallhu Alayhi Wasallam of his illness whereupon Sayyidina Rasuluallah Sallallhu Alayhi Wasallam passed his blessed hand over Imam Busairi's body. Through the barakat and blessing of Sayyidina, Rasuluallah Sallallhu Alayhi Wasallam Allah Ta’alaa granted him complete cure from his paralysis. When he awoke he found a scarf or shawl on his body which he had seen Sayyidina Rasuluallah Sallallhu Alayhi Wasallam place on his paralysed limbs. This resulted in the poem being named "Qasidah Burdah" (The Poem of the Scarf).
In the morning when due to some necessity. he went to the bazaar, a pious dervish greeted him with salaam and requested him to recite the qasidah which he had composed in praise of Sayyidina Rasuluallah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam The poet said that I have composed many poems in praise of Rasuluallah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam, which one do you wish to hear? The dervish replied: 'The one which begins with, A-min Tazak-kurin (i.e. Qasidah Burdah)". Upon this request the poet became wonder struck and said, "I take an oath that no one knows about this poem. Tell me the truth, from whom did you hear about it?" The dervish replied, "I take an oath by Allah that I heard it from you last night when in a dream you had recited it to Sayyidina Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam, whereupon Sayyidina Rasuluallah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam became attentive towards you and because of its blessings Allah Ta'alaa granted you complete cure from your ailment".
When the poet gave this poem to the dervish his secret became known to all the people and its barakat and blessings too became general for all.
When this poem reached Baha-ud-deen the governor of the country named Tahir, he so highly regarded and respected it that he would stand while listening to it.
It is also narrated that Sa'aadud-deen Farouqi, who was a viceroy of Baha-ud-deen, had became blind. In a dream he saw a pious person who told him to take the Qasidah Burdah from Baha-ud-deen and place it on his eyes. In the morning he told Baha-ud-deen about this dream. The Qasidah Burdah was brought and with full sincerity and conviction Sa'aadud-deen placed it on his eyes. Through its barakat Allah Ta'alaa granted him complete cure and restored his eyesight.
The virtues and specialities of Qasidah Burdah
The virtues of Qasidah Burdah are innumerable.
Some of its virtues (and specialities as appear in famous kitabs) are mentioned here:
For blessings in life (1ong life) recite 1001 times.
For the removal of difficulties recite 71 times.
To remove drought recite 300 times.
For wealth and riches recite 700 times.
To have male children recite 116 times.
To make easy all difficult tasks. recite 771 times.
Whoever recites it daily or has someone else recite it9 and thereafter makes damm (blow) on him, will be safeguarded from all hardships.
Whoever recites it once daily and makes damm blow) on his children, they will be blessed with long life.
Whoever recites it 17 times on a Thursday evening for 7 weeks will become pious and wealthy.
Whoever recites it in his bedroom for any work or special purpose, that purpose will be shown to him in a dream.
Whoever recites it 41 times in an old cemetery for 40 days, his enemies will be destroyed.
whoever reads it once daily on rosewater for 7 days and gives it to someone to drink, that persons memory will increase tremendously.
Whoever is afflicted with a great calamity or hardship, should keep 3 fasts and daily recite it 21 times.
Whoever writes it with musk and saffron and hangs it around his neck, will be safeguarded from seventy afflictions and difficulties.
The house in which it is read 3 times daily, will be protected from most difficulties.
If a person has important work, he should recite it 26 times on the night of Jumah (Thursday evening) and give 26 things in charity.
The house in which this qasidah is kept, will be safe-guarded from thieves, etc.
Whoever recites it 7000 times in his lifetime, will live up to the age of one hundred years.
whoever reads it over rose water and sprinkles it over his clothes, will become respected
and loved by the creation of Allah Ta'alaa.
On a journey if recited once daily, one will be protected from ail hardships of travel.
Whoever Is in debt should recite it 1000 times.
If someone reads it 41 times, or has someone else read it for him on the night of Jumuah, for a certain aim or purpose, will have his aim or purpose fulfilled.
The house in which this qasidah is read regularly will be saved from seven things:
From the evil of Jinn.
From plague and epidemics.
From smallpox.
From diseases of the eyes.
From misfortune.
From insanity.
From sudden death.
The house in which this qasidah is read daily, its inhabitants will also be bestowed with seven benefits:
Long life.
Abundance in sustenance.
Good health.
Help (from Allah).
One will see the NUR (splendour) of Sayyidina Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam.
Wealth.
Happiness and contentment.
Whoever wishes to know whether he will derive benefit or harm from a journey9 should read the qasidah 3 times, and before reading it, he should recite durood Shareef 1000 times He will thereafter be informed in a dream by Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam whether it would be beneficial or harmful to travel.
Whoever wishes to know the condition of a traveller, should recite the Qasidah 3 times together with durood Shareef on a Thursday night.
To remove the evil effect of jinn, read once daily for 40 days and make damm (blow) on the affected person.
If a child is born, then read it 9 times on sea water and bath the child with it. The child will be saved from all types of calamities.
For labour pains (child birth), read 3 times and blow on rose water. Mix the rose water with ordinary water and drink it. Place a little on the loins as well and ease will be experienced immediately.
Whoever reads it once after embarking on a ship and passes through a severe storm, will be safeguarded. whoever is imprisoned, should recite it continuously and he will be freed.
If land is infertile, read and make damm (blow) on the seeds, thereafter plant them, abundant crops will grow.
If farmlands are infested or plagued with locusts, then read it 7 times on sand and sprinkle it through the lands. wherever the sand falls, that land will not be infested again.
In conclusion we find that for whatever purpose "Qasidah Burdah" is read, In-Shaa-Allah that purpose will be fulfilled, with the precondition that ones earnings and food is halaal. One also becomes constant in eating, sleeping, and talking less. May Allah Ta'alaa through His infinite grace and mercy accept this humble effort, grant us death with Iman, bestow us, our Ma'shaykh, and our families, eternal love for Sayyidina Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam through the blessings of this qasidah. Ameen.
