Assalamu alaikum

hi everyone, i am new to this forum , stumbled across it, looking around for stuff on sufism/sufis. I am a convert to Islam and well to cut a long story short, have know someon for many years who I though was muslim in my sense of what a muslim is, but i spoke to them and they follow a sufi path and spiritual leader!!

so i read up on some stuff that they recommended, but am lost at where to start, just a mass of infomation

i find some aspects of sufi behaviour to be completly in line with my thinking even prior to my reverting to islam. Have a keen interest in healing and energy fields, have always meditated and used visulisation techniques since a very small child. also dont know how sufi Islam views it but have a personal interest in NLP.

so what now, planted the seed, but how can i learn more, what do i do.

(sorry if any of my terminology is wrong, no insult was intended to anyone, truely here as a open soul willing to learn, Insha'Allah through Allahs will and my comitment )

many thanks
sisr

As Salaam Alaikum Wa Rahmatullah Wa Barkatahu.

I pray this mail reaches you in the best of Islam, Iman, and Ihsan.

Al Hamdulillah for accepting Islam and becoming muslim and also having the invitation from Allah in the blessed science of Tasawuf.

Please know that Tasawuf is the spirit of Islam. the same way the Ruh is to the body. without the Ruh the body has no life.

And also know that ones level of Tasawuf will always depend on ones level of following the Sharia. for they are two sides of the same coin.

The goal of Tasawuf is to clean the heart of impurities and to discipline the human ego to divine servitude. So the first step is of course sincerity in wanting to clean the heart and enter the divine presence through the following of the Quran and the actions and words of our Beloved Prophet.

there are many ways to Allah, through many schools of purification termed as "tariqa". these tariqas have different methods of "arriving" or becoming spiritualy "victorious". Some schools method is loud zikr, some silent zikr, some by meditation, some by seclusion, some by love, some by sending prayers upon the Prophet, etc.

It all depends on what method is preferred by you. And the one that fits your lifestyle. These different methods are taught by various "shuyukh" who are like spiritual doctors who prescribe medications for the sick.

For as we learn in the hadith "the sickness is the sin" So we must attach ourselves to these shuyukh or awliya who are the inheritors of the Prophet in knowledge and in behavior. and through their companionship and instruction one will be successful Inshallah in this world and the next.

So you must look for a shaykh and choose a certain tariqa that you think will be best for you and what you will be attached to. As they all lead to Allah and His Prophet, they all will suffice. You have the honorable Qadiriya, the Naqshbandiya, the Shadhiliya, the Ba'Alawiya, the Tijaniyya, and others. and all of these have what you refer to as meditation, healing, and spiritual energy. And all of these are including in the method of zikr of Allah's names and other formulas

The shuyukh and the awliya are like flowers in a garden. all of the flowers are beautiful, but each has their own gift of beauty. and whichever u pick depends on what your needs are and what Allah guides you too.

It is recommended to make Dua Istikara for Allah to guide you to the path that has your name on it. And in the meanwhile send many salawat to the Beloved Prophet with the intention of finding the right tariqa and shaykh for you.

may you and all of us find success

Salaam

Tasawuf is a synonym for the word Tazakiya. which means to "purify".

This term is found many many many times throughout the Quran. We all want a purified heart and disciplined soul.

The goal of this purification is Allah's pleasure and a soul that is disciplined for worship, love, and fear of Allah.

you can find information on certain tariqas online, books, and on this very site.

the awliya are the friends of Allah, the ones that are close to him, and in a nutshell are those who fear Allah the most in open and in secret. The shaykhs are the ones who are the teachers and trainers of these certain tariqas. they are the exemplars of the Prophet and his sunna.

wsalam sister,

Welcome to Islam! May Allah Almighty bless you with his blessings of both the worlds.

1-Sufism means to stay clean(purify oneself) from the things disliked by Allah Almighty or the things which keep you away from the Beloved God as in Quran Allah says
'O man I have created you for my worship ( Marifah & Ehsaan) alone.

2- A wali means Friend of Allah or someone who has won the favor of God Almighty due to his good deeds.Shykh is a person who is a wali and authorized to teach his students how to purify ones heart and soul and able to guide his students towards the love of Allah Almighty.
Its is therefore necessary for the Shykh to be well versed both in the knowledge of Shariah and Tariqah.

3- Please have a look at the script of my Shykh's Maktoobat (letter) inshallah you will see things explained, inshallah.
