Signs of Protection

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, remarked that whoever recites once a day the thirty-three verses known as Ayatu-l-Hirz (Signs of Protection) will be safe from all miseries, beasts and thieves and that, furthermore, these verses contain the cure of all diseases. The efficacy of these verses has been described by many. It is evident that it is very useful to recite them, and it is said that they can also guard against the dangers of war.

1. The Ayat are:
The first four ayat of Suratu-l-Baqarah (2:1-4)
2. The Ayatu-l-Kurs? and the next two ayat up to the word “khalidun” in Suratu-l-Baqarah (2:255-257)
3. The last three ayat of Suratu-l-Baqarah from “lillahi ma fis-s-samawati” up to the end (2:284-286)
4. Three ayat from Suratu-l-Araf (the Heights) from “inna rabbakum” up to “muhsinin” (7:54-64)
5. The last two ayat of Surah Banii Israail (the Children of Israel) (also called Isra’ or the Night Journey) from “quli-da’u-llaha” until the end (17:110-111)
6. The first ten ayat of Suratu-s-Saffat (the Ranks) up to “lazib” (37:1-10)
7. Two ayat from Suratu-r-Rahman (the Merciful) from “ya ma’shara” up to “tantasiran” (55:21-24)
8. The first two ayat of Suratu-l-Jinn (the Djinn) from “qul ‘uhiya” up to “shatata” (72:1-4)

These are known as “The Thirty-Three Verses.”
