I want to know the Tijaniyya opinion about Tawis (tawees, taouiz). Is it haram acording the tariqa? I Heard it is used by some sufis in Africa. However, many peoples call it shirk. What is the Tijani veredict in this subject?

Al Hamdulillah,

Allah said: "And We reveal of the Qur'an what is a healing
and a mercy for the believers, and the wrong-doers are not
increased except in loss" (17:82)

As Salaam Alaikum Sidi Jafar,

I am in no way a scholar, and i will only repeat what I have heard from those who are scholars. Tawiz and Ruqya are found in the MUSLIM world wordwide not just in Africa. And its origin is found in the early history of Islam. and has been approved of by the Prophet and practiced by the Companions, the Tabieen, the Scholars, and the Awliya. but they do have certain precautions

Tawiz is Haraam under two conditions, and it is Halaal under two conditions.

If a person writes and wears a Tawiz, it is Haraam if:

1. The contents of the Tawiz are something from outside of the Quran and Sunnah (its outer and inner words and meanings).

and

2. If the writer, the owner, or carrier of the Tawiz, thinks in his mind or belief that the Tawiz is the object of power, relief, help, or sustanance, rather than Allah.

The Tawiz is therefore Halaal if :

1.The contents of the Tawiz are something from the Quran and its meanings or inner content etc and doesnt go against the Quran and Sunnah of the Prophet.

and

2. The writer, owner, carrier of the Tawiz is believed only as a MEDIUM that servants asks Allah. and the person believes the Tawiz is not the source of any help, power, relief, or sustanance. and that all things and occurances happen through the power and will of ALLAH ONLY.

the Tawiz or Ruqya is only a medium through which the servants asks for safety, health, etc.

The same way when you ask Allah for wealth. You will NEVER receive it directly. The only one who receives directly from Allah is the Beloved Prophet.
Any one else they will receive whatever they ask through an intermediary or medium.
So when you asks for wealth, you receive it either through a job, a person, etc.

The wealth has come from Allah, although you received it through a job or a person.

The same thing with your health.

you may pray for good health.

Usually when you get healthy its through either a doctor, a certain herb, or a certain type of medication, or a certain food.

The healing has come from Allah, although it came to you through these above mentioned mediums.

So the Tawiz is nothing but a medium.
Some will say that the use of Tawiz is Haraaam, but these who say this are mostly those who follow their own fatwas and have not listened to the works of the scholars of the majority.
There was a time during the his early Prophethood in which Ruqya and Tawiz were forbidden. And this he was referring to was the Tawiz and Ruqya of Jahiliyya. during pre era of Islam methods.

Then it was allowed once Allah send the above verse of Quran

Allah said: "And We reveal of the Qur'an what is a healing
and a mercy for the believers, and the wrong-doers are not
increased except in loss" (17:82)

There are many instances where the Prophet and His Sahaba used incantations for sicknesses such as Saying the al Fatiha over the sick,
the use of Ayatul Kursi, the use of honey, the use of certain verses in the Quran for protection, and etc.

There are many stories and examples during the time of the Prophet pointing to this. one is that Abdullah ibn Umar made them for his children.

There was a time during the time of Caliph Omar, RA when the governor of Sham had a headache, and he wrote to Sidina Omar about it complaining of his pain.

Sidina Omar then sent him a turban. and when the governor put on the turban he didnt have his headache anymore. When he took it off, the pain returned. And when he put it back on it went away again.
Curiously he unfolded the turban to see what was in it, and a piece of paper fell from inside it. and on it was written.

BISMILLAHI AR RAHMAN AR RAHEEM

So they are Halaal if one has the proper courtesy and proper insight with them. And one must have proper adaab while wearing them. Like taking them off before entering a bathroom, or having them on the floor, because they have Quran in its contents.

Also if one wears them, it is best to wear them under or inside your garment not to pull unwanted attention to yourself. For we live in a time where every ignoramus thinks they are educated

Tawiz are only written forms of Supplication.
